Christ the Healer: A Program of the Pontifical Mission Societies Archdiocese of New Orleans
The Cristo Sana (Christ Heals) Children’s Home is a non-governmental, non-profit institution created to address the socio-economic problems faced by the youth of Granada who suffer from chronic homelessness and substance abuse. In response to this reality, the Cristo Sana Children’s Home’s mission is the formation and development of a home for children and adolescents that strengthens their self-esteem, talents, attitudes and capabilities in order to expand their opportunities in life, work, and society.
Hogar de Ninos provides a stable home for boys ranging in age from 5 to 16 years old. These boys come from many different backgrounds. Some boys are found on the street abandoned by their family. Other boys are brought to Los Niños by a family member who knows they can no longer provide for the child. Then there are some boys who have no family at all. Currently there are 26 boys living at Los Niños. There is room for 50 boys and it is the hope of Los Niños to have enough financial support to be filled to full capacity by the end of 2007.
Los Niños runs strictly on donations so when the financial needs of Los Niños is known to be met and at a level that can be maintained, more boys will be taken in at the hogar. Sadly, Sister Mercedes had to turn away 17 boys due to lack of funds. Therefore, Cristo Sana has put together a Sponsorship Program to keep this from happening in the future.
